Field Trips

Returning to Our Roots

🌿 Field Trips - Local Agricultural History

“Returning to Our Roots” is a 45-minute guided walking tour for elementary and high school students, The tour takes students through The Root 66 Garden while teaching them about the rich agricultural history of Rancho Cucamonga,

Students will learn how early farmers grew grapes, olives, fruit, and vegetables, and how they used wells, composting, and animals to create self-sufficient farms, They will also see how these practices continue today in sustainable gardening 🌱

What You’ll See

During the tour, students explore:

  • The historic well that served vineyard owners over a century ago,
  • Urban Roots and FoodShare plots where youth grow food for the community,
  • Olive trees and vineyards that tell the story of local farming and winemaking,
  • Composting and other self-sufficient gardening practices,
  • Fruit tree orchards, chickens, and ducks,
  • Bees, flower farms, and the Flower Farmstand,
  • Outdoor kitchen and picnic area with a hands-on take-home activity 🍽️,

Why It’s Important

This field trip helps students connect with their community and the land around them, By learning about Rancho Cucamonga’s early farms and orchards, students gain an appreciation for where food comes from and how sustainable practices preserve both history and the environment,

It’s more than a tour, it’s a chance for students to see history, science, and community come together, and to take a piece of that learning home 🌿

Cost: $15/student
