Kids Korner at The Root 66 Garden is an ongoing, kid led art, nature, and garden project where creativity takes center stage.

Made possible through a generous grant from the Rancho Cucamonga Community and Arts Foundation, RCCAAF, Kids Korner gives children and families a place to create, explore, get their hands dirty, and become part of the garden.

Designed and led by Adie Kurth as her high school senior community service project, Kids Korner is a dedicated space of about 3,600 square feet within our almost 15 acre community garden.

This is a space where kids can imagine it, build it, paint it, plant it, and make it their own.

Kids Korner is more than a garden space. It is an evolving outdoor art installation created by kids.

Art, nature, gardening, and hands on projects come together to create a space that continues to change as more children contribute.

Every mural, painted rock, stepping stone, sign, planter, and creative project becomes part of the story of Kids Korner.

One of the newest features of Kids Korner is Banana Creek, a shallow, kid friendly area where children can walk through the creek barefoot and explore how water moves through the garden.

Kids can see how the creek once helped irrigate plants and trees through flooding, then compare it with the different irrigation systems used throughout the garden today.

It is a fun way for kids to experience how water has helped grow the garden and learn that there is more than one way to get water to a plant.

Kids Korner is part of the larger Root 66 Garden, giving children an opportunity to:

• Learn from gardeners of all ages
• Explore established garden areas
• See where food is grown
• Learn about plants, trees, animals, and water
• Add their own creativity to the garden
• Become part of something bigger than themselves

Kids Korner creates a natural connection between generations, where kids can learn from the garden while leaving their own mark on it.

Art is at the heart of Kids Korner. Ongoing and future projects include:

• Large scale murals designed and painted by kids
• Rock painting installations
• Hand painted garden signs
• Personalized stepping stones
• Pinecone bird feeders
• Nature based crafts
• Owl boxes and bird houses
• Seasonal art displays
• Mud kitchen for imaginative outdoor play
• Pallet built fencing and creative structures
• Artist designed raised planter beds
• Flowers, herbs, and fun plantings

The space will continue to grow as new ideas come from the kids who participate.

Kids Korner is guided by Adie, but the ideas and creativity come from the children who participate.

Kids are encouraged to:

• Share their ideas
• Create their own designs
• Work together
• Experiment with different materials
• Get messy
• Try something new
• Leave their personal mark on the garden

There is no perfect way to create Kids Korner.

The goal is to let kids be kids and give them a place where their ideas matter.

Kids Korner is a volunteer program, and children participate with a parent or guardian.

To participate:

• Register through the Root 66 Garden Volunteer page and join the Kids Korner Committee
• Complete the required participation forms
• Join us for Kids Korner volunteer activities when available
• Bring your creativity and willingness to get involved

No experience is needed.

Just bring your imagination, curiosity, and willingness to get a little messy.

Kids Korner is designed to continue evolving long after the initial buildout.

Field trips, visiting families, young artists, volunteers, and local children will have opportunities to contribute projects and artwork.

We already have 50+ kids visiting the garden each week, and Kids Korner gives many of those children a place to create, explore, and feel connected to the garden.

As the space grows, so will the ideas, artwork, plants, structures, and memories created here.

Kids Korner gives children something that belongs to them.

They are not just visiting the garden.

They are helping create it.

They are painting the walls, building the spaces, planting flowers, exploring Banana Creek, learning about water, and creating something that other children will enjoy long after they are finished.

This is about more than art.

It is about creativity, community, nature, and giving kids the opportunity to see what they can build when they work together.
