Step into a place where community, sustainability, and growth come together. We are proud to be the largest community garden in California! Spanning over 14 acres, we offer more than 90 rental plots, along with shared spaces where people connect, learn, and grow.
Whether you’re here to plant, harvest, or simply enjoy the peace of nature, you’ll find a home here. Together, we nurture not only the land but also friendships, knowledge, and community.
The Root 66 Community Garden, founded in 2014, is a nonprofit dedicated to growing fresh, organic food for our members and the surrounding community. Through our Roots to Wellness Program, we also provide hands-on education, create therapeutic green spaces, and strengthen community connections. Supported by donations and our unique event venue rentals, The Root 66 Garden continues to grow wellness, friendships and community,
Growing food together has the same value as breaking bread together. We get to know our neighbors, build strong family bonds, share knowledge, feel more connected to the larger community, develop leadership skills, learn new skills, and reduce stress. Become an urban gardener with us—grow food for your family while supporting your community.
The Root 66 Community Garden provides education opportunities, not only for our own urban gardeners, but for everyone within the community. Learn how to grow food, pickle, can, compost, reconnect with the soil, and have a lifetime of health and well-being. We all need a place to play in the dirt.
Grow your own organic food, connect with your community, and embrace a healthier lifestyle—no backyard required! At The Root 66 Community Garden, apartment dwellers and seasoned gardeners alike can join the food revolution with raised planters or larger garden plots. Start small, dream big, and grow with us!

In 2014, Dee Matreyek founded The Root 66 Garden in Rancho Cucamonga, California, with a vision to create a vibrant community space centered on sustainable agriculture and reconnecting people with their food sources. Inspired by her childhood in Upland—where her parents tended 27 fruit trees, two strawberry patches, and abundant gardens for canning, baking, and cooking—Dee channeled her passion for gardening, education, and community building into the creation of The Root 66 Garden. Today, the garden provides individuals and families with the opportunity to grow their own food, participate in educational workshops, attend farm-to-table events, and engage in meaningful community projects.
A dedicated social justice advocate and entrepreneur, Dee earned her Ph.D. in Comparative Politics and African Studies from Claremont Graduate University in 1998. She has pursued advanced studies in peacebuilding and multicultural conflict transformation at Eastern Mennonite University and the School for International Training. In 2001, she founded the Restorative Justice Center of the Inland Empire, promoting peace and reconciliation through mediation, conflict resolution, and community engagement. Dee has also taught restorative justice and conflict resolution at the Chino Institute for Women, Loma Linda University, and Chapman University. Her international work includes research in South Africa and humanitarian projects in Kenya through the Rancho Cucamonga Rotary Club, providing books, building a well, and supporting a local school.
Through The Root 66 Garden and her broader work, Dee continues to create inclusive, restorative spaces that strengthen communities, promote sustainability, and support local food systems. The garden itself is a tribute to her parents, Bill and Mary Matreyek, who instilled in her the importance of cultivating and preserving a legacy for future generations.
